iRiver vs. iPod
The iRivers completely murdered the iPod’s in reviews this christmas..
When the sales figures come out it’ll be really interesting to see what percentage of the population care about functionality over percieved-style/advertising.
Having spoken to a few (female) friends from school who were yet to actually hear of “mp3s”, so were completely uninterested in “mp3 players” that wern’t iPod’s, I’m not particularily hopeful.

I have used the iRiver H340 for ages now without problems. I have just purchased brand new 80Gb iPod for my daughter. My verdict? iPod is just an over-marketed product sold on the ’sheep technique’. If MOST people have one….then the REST want one!
Not in my case though. H340 has way more functions than iPod, has a better spec and can utilise more different types of file systems. Plus it has the on-board mic, can use Ogg Vorbis, is STRONGER than an iPod, can charge from a PC or a separate charger plus…..oh the pro’s go on a LOT further than the iPod. I work in professional TV in the UK and design and build high-end equipment. so my levels of expectation are VERY high. Looking at the flimsy but WELL marketed iPod……its too delicate with touch controls that are hard to mavigate with. PLUS the iPod is so very limited in its technical levels. Poor. So poor.
iRiver on the other hand does more, is stronger, reads more file types, doesn’t need iTunes to do everything and looks very nice. Plus it can be expanded. Oh…my iRiver H340 has been dropped three times, trodden on AND sat on without ANY damage. Imagine that with an iPod? Oooerr….no thanks! iRiver wins HANDS DOWN!!! The ONLY good thing with iPod is that it is Apple (I use and swear by Macs, but STILL wouldn’t own an iPod). Apples marketing is good as they do manage to rope in so many sheep. Everybody in this world strives to be individual. Unique clothing, unique shoes, tailored make-up, different hairstyles. Everyone pretends that they are different. But then they ALL buy an iPod. Hmmmmm. Money talks and sheep follow.
I tried to tell my daughter (14yo) that iPod was weaker than iRiver. She looked at the pros and cons, admitted that iPod WAS an inferior product but that EVERYONE at her school had one. Each to their own. Well done Apple. Not as good as iRiver, but still….well done.
